Kontra-Musi Records: 20 years of sound at the Malmö Festival

In April 2006, Kontra-Musik released its very first vinyl record—aptly titled Surfacing—by Swedish artist Agaric. A new label had entered the international scene with a clear ambition: to stand the test of time. With landmark releases by artists such as TM404, Sebastian Mullaert, Johanna Knutsson, Frak, PST and Vanligt Folk, among many others, the label celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026 with a series of showcases around the world. But Kontra-Musik is more than a dance music label. For two decades, its catalogue has also embraced ambient, dub-influenced and more experimental sounds. This Sunday in August, at the Malmö Stage during the Malmö Festival, the label invites friends and collaborators to highlight this side of its identity—where listening takes centre stage and the boundaries of electronic music continue to be pushed.
